So what are backlinks?
Backlinks are basically a currency of the internet and with quality backlinks you can increase your website position in search engine rankings.
A backlink is a referral from one website to another, recommending them to visitors.
To write amazing content is an acquired skill and some people are more in tune with it than others and requires practice and perseverance. If you write regularly you should take naturally to blogging. Depending on your style, it can be a balance between inserting keywords (on-page SEO) as naturally as possible without making it uncomfortable to read whilst maintaining the flow of your words. When you see the same keyword repeated it becomes obvious what the blogger is doing and gets in the way of the reading experience. If your content is worthy it will share itself and get natural backlinks. And always, always try to write for your readers rather than for search engines.
So what is this elusive and amazing content? There are many things that go into making this superior content these tips may help:
I would say being original and knowledgeable go hand-in-hand. Knowledge about your subject means you can explain things in detail and see things from a different point of view. Maybe even come up with a new ways of doing things that haven’t been dreamt up before. I think this involves being well-informed but if you wrote with great style and poise, this would also help your cause. Originality comes in many forms, but for blog writing it is mainly style or the quality of your information.
Who doesn’t like a list! They are perfect for internet users. A list always comes with sub-headers which are great for skim readers who like choosing paragraphs they are interested in. Also in list formats you can choose what to quickly read as you as might know some points, but not others. Give your top list a catchy title which will hook people in, such as;
The ultimate guide to……………….
The Top 10 ……………………..
30 ways to succeed in ………………………
10 ways to be ………………………..
This leads nicely to my next point.
Attract people with catchy titles
An amazing title should attract you straight away and is a real asset when sharing on social media. As this is a shop window into your blog, so to speak. Try to make it catchy and give a clear indication how it might help your readers. ‘My guide to Twitter’ is an okay title, but to better it try ‘How to get 10000 Twitter followers in two weeks without any effort’ obviously I have pulled the numbers out of thin air. But you see what I mean. This shows you can really help visitors by:
- Helping them to get 10000 Twitter followers (the result if you follow the advice)
- Doing it within two weeks (a very short time scale)
- Doing it without any effort (implies it’s easy)
As you can see there is much more incentive with this title to carry on reading.
Give away free guides, free anything really…
Give away a free PDF guides for your niche (maybe a tutorial or guide) and people tend to link instantly. As who doesn’t like something for nothing! Just one thing, it can’t be a ‘rushed job’ and needs to be top quality and full of original content. This could be a combination of posts which fit together well or a standout piece of writing.
Interview a major player in your niche such as a top blogger. Interview through text or video can really attract an audience, as it promotes them and you.
Write timeless content
It’s wise to have universal content that is timeless. So if you talk about a WordPress plugin that information might be out of date in a half a year. A blog post with the title ‘How to be happy’ is unlikely to go out of date as it is universal and relates to many people.
People are more likely to bookmark long detailed articles.
In my experience, the way I use the internet is to bookmark favourite posts and go back to them later. I like long detailed articles which give me the information I need in a simple informed way. If the blogger seems like an expert, it’s an article I usually go back to again and again, usually checking out more of the blog at a later date. I can usually tell after reading a quarter of the post whether it’s any good and worth bookmarking. If not, I’m straight back to Google. This shows how important it is to immediately grab a visitor’s attention.
Take the content of your article and change it into a video, or info graphic to make it easier to digest.
So you have already written your fabulous article and instead of writing on a different topic why not change the media of your content and use it again. Therefore changing it from written to video; and you already have the script!
Ease of sharing
Always have share buttons located near your posts. You can get floating buttons or social media buttons that appear at the top or bottom of posts. Find them in the WordPress plugin directory. Always share your content on social media channels as without it you are purely relying on search engine optimization (SEO) and people might miss your amazing but hidden posts.
Have a personality, and write for human beings
Probably the most important is to write for human beings as they are your subscribers who will keep coming back repeatedly if they like what they read. As a reader of many blogs I find the similar information rehashed. The ones I keep going back to are the bloggers that are informed, useful and insightful. Telling me something other bloggers haven’t. And bloggers who have attractive style and voice.
Hope this helps, please share if it does.
